Born Douglas Martin Adkins on October 3, 1963, in Havre, Montana, he grew up in the rural communities of northeastern Montana, including Westby, Culbertson, Froid, and Sidney. Raised in a musical family, Adkins frequently sang with his sisters and developed an appreciation for country music at an early age. In addition to music, he excelled in athletics and school activities, participating in basketball, golf, and music programs while growing up.

Over the course of his career, he has written more than 200 songs and released numerous albums, including Just Livin’, Cowboy Comes Alive, Whiskey Salesman, Lonesome, Dirt Roads and Fence Lines, and A Cowboy’s Life.
